The Kauffman House was built in 1892 as a hotel and is, the society says, the only log hotel built in Grand Lake before 1900 that still stands; it is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Grand Lake Area Historical Society bought and restored it in 1973. Inside are a parlor and an upstairs bedroom papered from a c. 1915 photograph, a preserved section of wall covered in newspapers from December 1893 and January 1894, a strip of the original wallpaper, and a gallery added in 1990 whose exhibits change. Volunteers act as docents and guides. There are geocaches on the grounds and a virtual tour online.

Open Monday to Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, closed Sunday, from Memorial Day through August, then weekends in September and on special occasions through the year. Adults $5, children 12 and under free. Email historygrandlake@gmail.com.

Hours, admission, address and phone were read on the museum’s own page on 10 October 2026. That page carries no date of its own; the society’s news and events page lists a talk on Tuesday, October 13, which the Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s event calendar dates to 13 October 2026, and the chamber’s member page lists the society with both of its museums.
