Grand Lake history: from a log hotel to a motor court

Kauffman House and Cottage Court put two eras of travel beside the lake: a log hotel and an early motor court. Their museums are seasonal; the downtown walk between them is not.

Two of Grand Lake’s historical museums tell the story of how visitors stayed here. One began as a log hotel beside the lake; the other preserves the layout of an early motor court. Together they show the town’s visitor economy in a short walk.

Begin with the Kauffman House

The Kauffman House Museum stands at 407 Pitkin Street. The historical society dates the building to 1892 and describes it as Grand Lake’s only surviving log hotel built before 1900. Ezra Kauffman ran the hotel until his death in 1920; his widow and daughters continued it as a summer hotel. It was sold in 1946, and the historical society bought and restored it in 1973. Its exhibits and restored rooms show a small hotel that served people who came for the lake and the surrounding country long before a modern road trip made Grand Lake an easy weekend destination.

Then change the mode of travel

Cottage Court preserves the next chapter: lodging arranged around travelers arriving by car. The society’s museum page gives the times of staffed visits.

The society relies on volunteers. The Kauffman House keeps a seasonal schedule, with special openings at other times; out of season, ask about current openings or use the society’s online material.

Finish at the water

Grand Avenue leads back from the museums to the boardwalk and the public spaces on the lake, and the walking-order guide links them in order. The family guide pairs the walk with Juniper Library and a park outing. Crossing Rocky Mountain National Park to Estes Park is a separate trip, on a road that may close for the season.
